Industry statistics for small towns and Rural Districts in England and Wales for 1951
Approx. number of rows:

Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. The data were transcribed from Table 3. "Industries (Orders and Selected Units) and Status Aggregates, Occupied Males and Females aged 15 years and over" for "Urban areas with Populations of Less than 50, 000, Rural Districts and New Towns", pp. 114-286 in Census 1951: England and Wales: Industry Tables (London: HMSO, 1957).
  2. This is a complete transcription of all data in the table, including the data for New Towns.

Notes:

  1. This table complements Table 2, which holds a more detailed classification of county totals and of towns over 50,000 population, so does not contain any county or national totals.
  2. A note to the table states that 'The figures relate to persons working in each area', unlike the 1931 industry data which are based on place of residence.
  3. This table lists the numbers employed in each of the 24 "Orders", plus those in only certain selected "Units".

Checking:

  1. As the data were input, the following check-sums were calculated:
    • That the numbers in the different 'Status Aggregates' (Employers, Managers, Operatives and Working on own account) sum to the 'TOTAL - ALL INDUSTRIES'.
    • That the numbers in the individual Orders sum to the 'TOTAL - ALL INDUSTRIES'.
    • That the numbers in the sub-categories of each of five Orders sum to the listed totals: II (Mining and Quarrying), VI (Engineering, shipbuilding and electrical goods), XX (Distributive trades), XVIII (Gas, electricity and water) and XXII (Public administration and defence).
Seven orders do not have any sub-categories listed, so there is no need to compute check sums: V (Metal manufacture), VIII (Metal goods not elsewhere specified), IX (Precision instruments, etc), XI (Leather, leather goods and fur), XVI (Other manufacturing), XVII (Building) and XXI (Insurance, banking and finance). That leaves 12 Orders which have sub-categories but for which a check-sum could not be calculated: I, II, III, IV, VII, X, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XXIII and XIV. The total number of Married Women could also not be checked this way. Overall, 52 out of the 88 numeric variables listed are covered by a check-sum.
  2. The data have been further cross-checked against the figures for counties and large towns in table 2 of the Industry Report, by (a) summing the industry figures in this table across all districts in each county, (b) summing data in table 2, where necessary grouping rows in table 2 to match the structure of table 3, for both overall county totals and the totals for all large towns within each county, and (c) comparing the male and female totals for each industry in each county to identify cases where the sum of the district figures did not match the reported county total.
  3. In the following cases, a value was 'corrected' even though it had been transcribed correctly from the printed table, to achieve consistency with the county totals.
    • Hertfordshire: The figure for males for '1. Agriculture and horticulture' in Stevenage UD was printed as 41 but revised to 141 to meet the county total, as for inland areas this figure is always equal to or only slightly less than the overall total for Order I, 'Agriculture and horticulture', which in this case is 143.
    • The sum of the printed figures for '110. Cotton spinning, doubling, etc.' for females is less than the reported county total by 1,000, much the largest discrepancy following checking and correction. On detailed inspection of the data, it was found that Failsworth UD, with a total of 1,419 women working in textiles but only 201 listed as in spinning, had a far lower percentage in spinning than surrounding towns. It was also the only district where the sum of all listed sub-categories within textiles (418) left enough women unaccounted for (1,001) to cover the difference: the next largest difference was 243. The figure for women in spinning in Failsworth was therefore raised from 201 to 1,201.
    • Norfolk: The figure for makes for 'XXIII. Professional services' in Docking RD was printed as 178 but was revised to 78 as that was consistent with both the 'All Industries' total for Docking and the total for that Order for Norfolk. Further confirmation is that the Order figure for women for Docking was 129, and for Rural Districts this was generally higher than the figure for men.
    • Yorkshire West Riding: The figure for males for '245. Retail distribution of non-food goods' for Sowerby Bridge UD was printed as 110 but was revised to 119 as that was consistent with both the total for Order 20 for that distict and the county total for the Unit.
  4. Following the checking and correcting described above, and an additional round of double-checking, the following inconsistencies remained:
    • Derbyshire: The computed total for '223. Goods transport by road' for females is less than the reported county total by 2.
    • Durham: The computed total for '242. Wholesale distribution of food and drink' for females is greater than the reported county total by 90.
    • Durham: The computed total for '244. Wholesale distribution of non-food goods' for females is less than the reported county total by 100.
    • Durham: The computed total for '245. Retail distribution of non-food goods' for females is greater than the reported county total by 10. These three errors within Distributive Trades cancel out.
    • Kent: The sum of the individual Orders for women in Tenterden MB is more than the printed ALL INDUSTRIES total by 11, and the same sum for Tonbridge UD is less than the printed ALL INDUSTRIES total by 11.
    • Middlesex: The computed total for '285. Catering, hotels, etc.' for males is less than the reported county total by 100.
    • Somerset: The computed total for 'Married Women' is more that the reported county total by 4.
    • Wiltshire: The computed total for '30,31,33. Coke ovens, chemicals and explosives' for females is greater than the reported county total by 2.
    • Wiltshire: The computed total for '112. Woollen and worsted' for males is greater than the reported county total by 1.
    • Wiltshire: The computed total for '113,114. Rayon, etc. production, weaving; silk for males is less than the reported county total by 1.
    • Wiltshire: The computed total for '123. Textile finishing, etc. for males is less than the reported county total by 1.
    • Yorkshire, West Riding: The computed total for 'XV. Paper and printing' for females is greater than the reported county total by 1.
    • Yorkshire, West Riding: The computed total for '180. Paper and board' for females is greater than the reported county total by 1.
    • Yorkshire, West Riding: The computed total for 'XIX. Transport and communication' for females is less than the reported county total by 1.
    • Yorkshire, West Riding: The computed total for '220. Railways' for females is less than the reported county total by 1.
