1. This list of Divisions and Sections was abstracted from the 'Summary of Structure' (http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/classifications/current-standard-classifications/standard-industrial-classification/sic-2007-summary-of-structure.xls, accessed 19th December 2014).
2. The census labels were extracted from Key Statistics table KS606, for males, as downloaded from http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/rel/census/2011-census/key-statistics-for-local-authorities-in-england-and-wales/rft-table-ks606ew.xls on 2nd June 2015.

Notes:

1. This table simply lists the 'Orders' in SIC 2007, providing them with labels, and assigns each to one of the higher-level 'Sections', which are also provided with labels.
2. The census sections are identical except that Sections R to U are merged into one, covering:
   • R ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION
   • S OTHER SERVICE ACTIVITIES
   • T ACTIVITIES OF HOUSEHOLDS AS EMPLOYERS; UNDIFFERENTIATED GOODS-AND SERVICES-PRODUCING ACTIVITIES OF HOUSEHOLDS FOR OWN USE
   • U ACTIVITIES OF EXTRATERRITORIAL ORGANISATIONS AND BODIES
   Although we do not include a separate ID letter or number for these, each starts with the letter identifying the Section, the final one being listed as 'R Other'.
3. One example of its possible use is as follows: the historical data for 1971 are linked to the 1971-specific codebook to assign 1971 categories to 2007 Divisions, but they are then further linked to this table to aggregate them into the simplified Sections used by the 2011 census:

4. This codebook also includes a set of highly simplified Sectors that we have defined:

   7. Public Services [including Health and Education]
   8. Unclassified

sic_division	Integer number.	Integer number identifying the 2007 SIC 'Division'. These form a single sequence running from 1 to 99, but we have added 100 to cover unclassifiable workers.
sic_division_name	Text string (max.len.=134).	Name of the 2007 SIC 'Division'.
sic_section	Text string (max.len.=6).	Capital Letter identifying the SIC 'Section'. These form a single sequence running from A to U, but we have added X to cover unclassifiable workers.
sic_section_name	Text string (max.len.=126).	Name of the 2007 SIC 'Section'. These are all in capital letters, as listed in the source.
census_section	Text string (max.len.=76).	Name of the Section as listed in the 2011 Census tabulations providing the most detailed industrial listing broken down by sex (see above). These are mainly in lowe case and group together the four final Sections.
census_manuf_grp	Text string (max.len.=66).	Seven-way categorisation of manufacturing, as used in Table "WP605EW - Industry (Workplace population)" in the 2011 outputs for England and Wales. The strings held here start with a number placing the groupings in the order used in the census listing. NB SIC Division 33, "Repair and installation of machinery and equipment", which is within Section C, Manufacturing, is NOT assigned to a grouping. Checking back against the documentation for the census table on NOMIS, no mention is made of this Division.
gbh_sector	Integer number.	Number from 1 to 8 identifying a set of highly simplified Sectors defined by the project.
gbh_sector_name	Text string (max.len.=24).	Name of the Sector, as defined by the project.
