Contents:
Ward-level industry statistics from the 1991 Census, from NOMIS
Approx. number of rows:
2,626,416
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1991.

Sources:

  1. This table is a complete copy of Table WB9, "Industry divisions/classes (1980 SIC): Employees & self-employed (SWS Set B - Persons working in zone) [10% Sample]" from the 1991 Census of Population, except in that all totals/higher levels have been removed. The data were downloaded from the NOMIS online system on 8th April 2016.

Notes:

  1. The table holds numbers of persons in each combination of Ward, Gender/Sex, Employment Status and Industrial "Class", so some form of aggregation will usually be needed.
  2. The industrial classification used here is documented in Central Statistical Office (1979), Standard Industrial Classification: Revised 1980 (London: H.M.S.O) See http://www.ons.gov.uk/ons/guide-method/classifications/archived-standard-classifications/uk-standard-industrial-classification-1992--sic92-/uk-standard-industrial-classification-1980.pdf, accessed 9th April 2016.
  3. These data are from a ten per cent sample, and list persons by their place of work, not their place of residence. The data are for "Frozen Wards", as defined below, and a file providing names for each Ward was downloaded from NOMIS when these data were extracted and is held in the same directory as the files used to build this table, so the Wards could be added to the AUO. However, for now the data are held mainly to enable GIS-based re-districting.

Checking:

  1. The data downloaded from NOMIS included (a) the overall total for each industry/status/gender combination for the whole country, and (b) overall totals for each status and gender combination within each ward. These were used as check sums to thoroughly check the industry/status/gender/ward data values for consistency, before being deleted.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
geogcode Text string (max.len.=10). These are six-character alphanumeric codes defined by ONS, and identify "Frozen" 1991 Wards. The documentation supplied by NOMIS says: "Wards are defined by the Local Government Commissions, and reviews take place on a rolling basis. ONS uses the wards in place at the time of the Census of Population as building blocks for other geographies. Currently, these are 1991 wards. These frozen wards allow the ONS to produce time series on a fixed geographic base. The UK has 11,330 frozen 1991 wards. Ward population counts can vary substantially, even within a single local authority, but the national average is about 5500. More populous electoral wards tend to occur in large urban areas."
lad_geogcode Text string (max.len.=9). ONS ID for the local authority district containing the ward, as used in ind_1991_lad and therefore enabling linkage to the Census of Employment data.
sex Text string (max.len.=5). Gender: 'F' = Female, 'M' = Male.
status Text string (max.len.=8). Employment status: 'EMPL' = Employee, 'SELF' = Self-employed.
sic_division Integer number. The following ten Divisions are defined here:
  1. Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing
  2. Energy and Water Supply Industries
  3. Extraction of Minerals and Ores other than Fuels; Manuf of Metals, Mineral Products & Chemicals
  4. Metal goods, Engineering & Vehicles Industries
  5. Other Manufacturing Industries
  6. Construction
  7. Distribution, Hotels and Catering; Repairs
  8. Transport and Communication
  9. Banking, Finance, Insurance, Business Services & Leasing
  10. Other Services
sic_class Integer number. Industry Class, as defined by SIC 1980. These are exactly as defined by NOMIS with two exceptions:
  • 'Diplomatic representation, international organisations, allied armed forces' is listed as SIC Class '00', but is held here as Class 100, partly so as to correctly place it within Order 9, 'Other Services'.
  • The table includes an un-numbered residual category, 'Industry not stated or not adequately described', which we treat as Class 999 (but for which sic_division is null).
persons Integer number. Number of persons working in the Ward with this combinatio of gender, employment status and industry.
