Sources:

  1. The data for England and Wales are taken from a separate 'Economic Activity Report' of the 1971 census, table 37, 'Males by area of usual residence and socio-economic class'. The National Totals were added in June 2017 by Paula Aucott from Table 37 of that report.
  2. This is a transcription of the original tables where the data was given as a 10 percent sample of the economically active male population above the age of 15.

Notes:

  1. The table covers the local government districts for the whole of England and Wales and was entered in Portsmouth in Spring and Autumn 2001.
  2. Those not included are the economically inactive who are classified as retired (over 65 and no longer working), housewives, students in educational establishments, those permanently sick, those not seeking or never have been employed, government trainees, au pairs and those who failed to answer the economic activity questions.
  3. When matching to Social Class anomalies are 'foremen' normally assigned to class IV or V would be placed in class III and 'managers' normally in class IV or V are also placed in class III (except groups 003, 004 and 006.) All other managers go into class II.
  4. This table was originally called seg_1971. It was amended in January 2010 to be seg_1971_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked to ensure the sum for each socio-economic section from G1 to G17 equalled the tot_m15.
  2. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G1_1_II to G1_1_IIIM and G1_2_II to G1_2_IIIM equalled the total for socio-economic group 1.
  3. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G2_1_II to G1_1_V and G2_2_II to G2_2_IIIM equalled the total for socio-economic group 2.
  4. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G5_1 and G5_2 equalled the total for socio-economic group 5.
  5. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G6_IIIN to G6_IV equalled the total for socio-economic group 6.
  6. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G7_II to G7_IV equalled the total for socio-economic group 7.
  7. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G12_II to G12_V equalled the total for socio-economic group 12.
  8. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G15_IIIM to G15_IV equalled the total for socio-economic group 15.
  9. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
  10. Those geographical unit names that did not matched straightforwardly during the cross-checking were double checked against the original tables to verify the transcription accuracy and corrections made accordingly.
