Socio-Economic Group data from the 1971 Census for Scotland
Approx. number of rows:
411
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1971.

Sources:

  1. The data for Scotland are taken from parts I-IV 'Economic Activity, County Tables' of the 1971 Scottish census, table 4, 'Males by area of usual residence and socio-economic class' for 'Planning sub-regions, cities, counties, local authority areas, new towns.' This is a transcription of the original tables, although overall county, aggregates of burghs and aggregates of districts of county figures have not been included as these are easily computed. The exception are the additional derived columns restating numbers in each class as a total sum which we have added to the table.
  2. The National Totals were added in June 2017 by Paula Aucott from Table 37, 'Males by area of usual residence and socio-economic class' in 'Great Britain, England and Wales, Scotland, regions, conurbations, counties, local authority areas' (10% sample) from the 1971 Census of Great Britain volume Economic Activity, Part V (10% sample)
  3. Need to double check if main data is sample 10% like England and Wales - not mentioned in documentation currently so assumed not.

Notes:

  1. The table covers the district-level units of Scotland and was entered by Rachel Granville in Portsmouth in Spring 2002.
  2. Anomalies in the social class groupings are 'foremen' normally assigned to class IV or V are placed in class III and 'managers' normally in class IV or V are also placed in class III (except groups 003, 004 and 006.) All other managers go into class II.
  3. The data covers Cities, Burghs, Districts of County, Landwards and New Towns as indicated by area_type:
    • CT: City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow
    • LB: Large Burgh (21 areas): These match those listed in the 1951 Industry Table
    • SB: Small Burgh (180 areas)
    • DC: District of County (198 areas)
    • LW: Landward (2 areas): These are for Nairn and Kinross, very small counties not divided into Districts of County
    • NT: New Town (5 areas): Cumbernauld, East Kilbride, Glenrothes, Irvine and Livingston
N.B. Landwards (apart from Kinross and Nairn), Counties and Wards are not listed.
  4. County Totals can be derived by summing together Districts of county, small and large burghs and Landwards grouped by county to get county totals.
  5. This table was renamed from "soc_1971_s" to be "seg_1971_s" in January 2017 to more accurately reflect its content.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked to ensure the sum for each socio-economic section from G1 to G17 equalled the tot_m15.
  2. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G1_1_II to G1_1_IIIM and G1_2_II to G1_2_IIIM equalled the total for socio-economic group 1.
  3. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G2_1_II to G1_1_V and G2_2_II to G2_2_IIIM equalled the total for socio-economic group 2.
  4. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G5_1 and G5_2 equalled the total for socio-economic group 5.
  5. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G6_IIIN to G6_IV equalled the total for socio-economic group 6.
  6. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G7_II to G7_IV equalled the total for socio-economic group 7.
  7. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G12_II to G12_V equalled the total for socio-economic group 12.
  8. The data were checked to ensure the sum of columns G15_IIIM to G15_IV equalled the total for socio-economic group 15.
  9. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets. Names currently not matched and needing to be checked are as follows:
    • DoC - Cumnock and Holmhead, Ayrshire.
    • New Towns - Glenrothes given in West Lothian but in Fife in AUO
    • - Cumbernauld given in Renfrew but in Dunbarton in AUO
    • - East Kilbride given in Renfrew but in Lanark in AUO
    • - Irvine given in Renfrew but in Ayr in AUO
