The data are for the single year 1971.

Sources:

  1. A full transcription of the 1971 Scottish parish level table from Table 5b - Population, historical table, selected censuses 1801-1971 for - "Civil parishes" from the individual county reports.
  2. In addition, the final column of the table giving the break down of wards in cities (currently Aberdeen only): Table 6 - Persons in private households, non-private establishments and elsewhere by sex for - "County of City, city wards" from the individual city reports.
  3. There is also a partial transcription of a table containing burgh information. It comes from Table 5a - Population, historical table, 1851-1971 for - "Large burghs, small burghs" from the individual county reports. It only covers the four cities of Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow plus following counties: Lanark, Midlothian, Perth, Renfrew, Ross and Cromarty, Stirling, and West Lothian. This data was transcribed in error, but is included here so not lost.

Notes:

  1. The main source table 5b does not exist for any of the cities. Instead they have a note saying "Sufficient information is not available to enable a satisfactory historical table to be prepared in respect of the parishes comprising the city." The 1971 total population figures have been extracted from another database table and added here for Aberdeen only. The other three cities have not yet been transcribed.
  2. This table is not directly equivalent in content to the parish table for England and Wales in 1971 as the equivalent table for Scotland does not include parishes. While this table only includes total population figures, it does so via a parish listing so it was deemed the most appriopriate table.
  3. These data were input by Harold Price at the University of Portsmouth in Spring 2023.
  4. The following values of area_type appear in the table:
    • County (32 areas)
    • City (1 area): Aberdeen
    • Civil Parishes (1058 areas)
    • City Wards (13 areas)
    • Burghs (170 areas)
    • Miscellaneous others (12 areas)
  5. The following kinds of place exist in the sco_type column:
    • Table 5b used rows: "SCO_CNTY", "SCO_PAR"
    • Table 6: "SCO_CNTY", "ScoWard"
    • Table 5b unused rows: "TOT" for mainland/insular sub-totals of counties
    • Table 5a: "CTY" = city, "SUB" = suburb, "V" = village, "B" = burgh (the status is given in the area column)

Checking:

  1. The numberic columns in this dataset were verified by summing the parish/ward rows and comparing against the county total provided in the original report. The only mismatch was Lanarkshire for 1971 where the summed total is 10,197 less than the given county total. The figures were correctly transcribed.
  2. All name fields were cross-referenced against the Administrative Unit Ontology to verify the name spellings and to add in unit identifiers. The only rows without unit IDs relate to; (i) 15 areas where boundaries changed and the parish is included in more than one county. These issues should be resolved once the boudnary change lists are integrated in the AUO fully. (ii) 4 units where an additional unit name needs to be added.
  3. While some burgh matching was attempted, the many different types of burgh are not well defined in how they relate to those in the AUO. Significant work is needed to determine how to resolve these issues. Therefore no g_unit values have been assigned to the burgh table rows.
