Parish and City Ward level statistics for Scotland taken from the 1961 census
Approx. number of rows:

Table type:

Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1961.

Sources:

  1. A full transcription of the 1961 Scottish equivalent of the parish level table in the rest of Great Britain - Table 3A - Acreage, population, private households and dwellings for - "Administrative County, Districts of County, County Council Electoral Divisions New Towns, Burghs -Large and Small" and for -"County of City, City Wards".

Notes:

  1. These data were originally input by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at the Queen's University of Belfast.
  2. Data for the four Scottish cities and the county of Selkirk were input by Paula Aucott at the University of Portsmouth in January 2015.
  3. The following values of area_type appear in the table and have been systematically matched to the AUO:
    • County (32 areas).
    • City (4 areas): Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow.
    • Large Burgh (20 areas)
    • Small Burgh (172 areas)
    • Landward (2 areas)
    • District of County (184 areas).
The following values of area_type appear in the table within the units listed above and have not been matched to the AUO:
    • City Wards (84 areas)
    • Burgh Wards (237 areas)
    • County Council Electoral Division (CCED) (934 areas).
  4. The figures for New Towns have not been transcribed because they are included in the other figures given for the county. Total figures have only been transcribed for the cities and occasional other units.
  5. Currently there are no burgh wards or CCEDs in the AUO therefore these rows cannot currently be matched and assigned g_unit values.
  6. While there are 1951 Scottish City wards in the AUO, they are not exactly the same as 1961. The city ward matching has been disabled until it is possible to add ward changes to the AUO.
  7. The data had rows for two Small Burghs without a name given for the burgh. By a process of comparison with other tables and the AUO these rows have been identified as Gourock in Renfrew and St Andrews in Fife. These should be double-checked when it is possible to look at a physical copy of the published table.
  8. Bonnyrigg and Lasswade Burgh in Midlothian is recorded in two rows, separating out Bonnyrigg and Lasswade. In the AUO both these burghs were abolished to create the merged burgh in 1930, but they obviously continued in some form. This needs further investigation.

Checking:

  1. This dataset has been verified in a number of ways. All numeric fields, with the exception of pop_1951, h_hold and dwelling have been checked by summing the data and comparing the sums with sums provided in the original report.
  2. All name fields were cross-referenced against the Administrative Unit Ontology to verify the name spellings and to add in unit identifiers. Mis-matches that were transcription errors were corrected from scans of the originals.
