Contents:
CORRECTED annual cause-of-death data for London districts 1860-1920
Approx. number of rows:
2,039
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Unspecified District
Chronology:
The data cover the period 1860 to 1920.
Dates and times are identified by:
   Year

Sources:

  1. These data were transcribed from the Annual Reports of the Registrar General, and then corrected for deaths in institutions by Graham Mooney. The data cover all Registration Districts in the County of London from 1860 to 1884, all Sanitary Districts from 1885 to 1900, and all London Boroughs from 1901 to 1920. [MORE DETAIL NEEDED]

Notes:

  1. This table is limited to London, and is based on Graham Mooney's work to re-allocate deaths in hospitals to the areas of prior residence; without this re-allocation, death rates for districts containing hospitals are inflated. Graham describes this work as being based on "a variety of methodologies".
  2. Up to 1910, the disease categories are the same as those appearing in 'cause_ew_reg_ann', only the header data being different. Further work is needed on the naming of those causes of death which are reported only from 1911.
  3. This table holds data for three different types of unit, depending on period, and this is recorded by the values in the row_type column:
    • 1860-84: Registration Districts ('RegD').
    • 1885-1900: Sanitary Districts ('SanD').
    • 1901-11: Metropolitan Boroughs ('MetB').

Checking:

  1. It is unknown what checks were originally run on the data; check with Graham Mooney.
  2. These files have been altered to run on Postgres, but otherwise are exactly the same as they were on the oracle server except for the following issue. The data was not loading because the .dat file had a problem at line 1761. This issue looks like it is related to the dates and affected all rows from 1911 Hackney onwards. All 1911 and later rows were transferred to a separate .dat file "cause_lon_ann_corr_1910s". Reviewing earlier incarnations of this table confirmed no data had been lost.
  3. Matching to the AUO gazetteer has been attempted. The g_unit column gives the final g_unit value for the smallest named unit. The units between 1895 and 1900 are given as sanitary districts in the data and have been matched as such. Most Sanitary Districts were created in 1872 and abolished in 1895 but London was different as it already had the Metropolitan Board of Works established in 1855. The Registration Districts assigned to rows in the data here do not necessarily match those in the AUO, so the matching for the Sanitary District rows has been left as directly to Sanitary Districts and not Registration Districts for now. Only Stepney 1885-1900 and Stoke Newington 1894-1900 have no g_unit value because neither is identified as a Sanitary District in Youngs' and therefore the AUO.
