According to the Centre for Metropolitan History's Gazetteer of Markets and Fairs in England and Wales to 1516, 'Newport, a mile from North Curry, Somerset (q.v.), was taxed at a fifteenth (indicating that it was not a borough or ancient demesne) in 1334, but appears to have been a borough in 1349.'
