Full Description:

"Government Office Regions" were created in 1994 with the sole purpose of working with the community to improve the prosperity and quality of life within each region. By 1996 these regions also became the "primary classification for the presentation of regional statistics" (National Statistics (2004)). These regions do not have an average size, as they are formed of complete unitary authorities. The "Government Offices for the Regions" were officially abolished in 2011. However, it was agreed that from the 1st April 2011 the former regions would be used as a region-level geography for statistical purposes and referred to as "regions".
