In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Spindlestone like this:
SPINDLESTONE, a township in Bambrough parish, Northumberland; 2¾ miles E by S of Belford. Acres, 467. Pop. 113. Houses, 27. S. hills are celebrated in the ballad of "the Laidley Worm of S. Hengh,'' written in 1270.
