In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Newton By the Sea like this:
NEWTON-BY-THE-SEA, a township, with a village, in Embleton parish, Northumberland; on the coast, 7½ miles N E of Alnwick. It has a post-office under Chathill. Acres, 1, 411. Pop., 238. Houses, 50. The inhabitants are employed chiefly in fisheries.
