Lancashire, on river Tame, 5 miles E. of Manchester and 188½ miles from London -- par., 9486 ac., pop. 75,310; parl. bor., 2149 ac., pop. 43,630; mun. bor., 1391 ac., pop. 37,040; 3 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-day, Saturday. Cotton mfrs. and engineering are carried on. It returns 1 member to Parliament; its parliamentary limits were extended in 1885.
