In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Ryarsh like this:

RYARSH, a village and a parish in Malling district. Kent. The village stands 2½ miles S W by W of Snodland r. station, and 6½ N W by W of Maidstone; and has a post-office under Maidstone. The parish includes alsopart of Aldon hamlet, and comprises 1, 551 acres. Real property, £3, 297. Pop., 447. Houses, 93. Part of the land is under hops. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury. Value, £3o5.* Patron, the Hon. W. J. Stratford. The church is partly Norman, butmainly later English.
