In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described South Hayling like this:
Hayling, South, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Hayling island, S. Hants, on the English Channel, 5 miles S. of Havant, 2582 ac. (18 water), 336 tidal water and 1849 foreshore, pop. 1066; is a rising watering-place.
