In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Offcote like this:

OFFCOTE-UNDERWOOD, a liberty in Ashborne parish, Derby; suburban to Ashborne town, and partly within the town's recognised limits. Real property, £5, 388; of which £138 are in gas-works. Pop. in 1851, 429; in 1861, 506. Houses, 84. Pop. of the part with-in the town, 390. Houses, 61. The Ashborne work-house is here; and, at the census of 1861, had 102 in-mates.
