SANDHURST, a village, a parish, and a sub-district, in Easthampstead district, Berks. The village stands on the river Blackwater, 1¼ mile N W of Wellington College r. station, and 4¾ S by E of Wokingham; and has a post-office‡ under Wokingham. The parish comprises 4, 562acres. ...
Real property, £2, 968. Pop. in 1851, 815: in 1861, 1, 271, of whom 226 were in the Military college. Houses, 172. The property is subdivided. Extensiveimprovements were made, and numerous houses erected, in recent years. S. Lodge is the seat of R. Gibson, Esq. The Military college stands in beautiful park-like grounds, about 2 miles from the church; was temporarily founded at High Wycombe in 1799, removed to Great Marlow in 1802, and brought hither in 1812; is a plain edifice, of centre and two wings, with a handsome Doric portico; includesa riding-school, an observatory, a well-furnished library, and a chapel; and contains accommodation for masters, officers, 300 senior students, and 400 cadets. Wellington college also is in the parish, but will be separatelynoticed. A hotel was erected near the r. station in 1864. Broadmoor asylum for criminal lunatics was opened in 1863, is an extensive brick edifice, and has accommodation for 500 inmates. There are two large barrows, and remains of a Roman camp. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Oxford. Value, £200.* Patron, the Bishop of O. The church was recently rebuilt; and is in the early English style. There are a large national school, and charities £13. The sub-district is conterminate with the parish.
