HAUTBOIS (Great), vulgarly Hobbies, a parish in Aylsham district, Norfolk; on the river Bure, adjoining Coltishall, and 8 miles NNE of Norwich r. station. Post town, Coltishall, under Norwich. Acres, 610. Real property, £1, 311. Pop., 195. Houses, 41. The principal landowners are Lord Suffield and Sir H. ...
T. Durrant, Bart.; and the former is lord of the manor. An hospital for poor travellers was founded, in the time of Henry III., by Sir Peter de Alto Bosco, or Hautbois, at the head of what was called Hautbois causeway. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Norwich. Value, £218. Patron, the Rev. J.Girling. The old church having fallen into decay, a new one, on a better site, was built in 1864, at a cost of £1, 200.
