In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stranorlar like this:
Stranorlar, small market town and par. with ry. sta., S. co. Donegal, on river Finn, 18 miles NE. of Donegal and 29 miles SW. of Londonderry - par., 15,511 ac., pop. 4109; town, pop. 420; P.O., T.O. Market-days, Friday and Saturday. Stranorlar has some trade in grain and flax.
