In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Lifford like this:
Lifford, town, Clonleigh par., NE. co. Donegal, on river Foyle, opposite Strabane, 15 miles SW. of Londonderry, pop. 511; P.O. Lifford is the co. and assize town of Donegal, but in other respects is a suburb of Strabane. It gives the title of Viscount to the family of Hewitt.
