In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Passage West like this:
Passage West, seaport town with ry. sta. (Passage), Marmullane and Monkstown pars., in co. and 7 miles SE. of Cork, on Cork Harbour, opposite Great Island, pop. 2440; P.O., T.O.; is situated amid fine scenery, and resorted to for bathing.
