In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Castletown Bearhaven like this:
Castletown Bearhaven, seaport town, Killaconenagh par., SW. co. Cork, 20 miles W. of Bantry by sea and about 30 miles by road round the shore of Bantry Bay, pop. 1028; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank.
