In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tralee like this:
Tralee, market and seaport town, township, and par. with ry. sta., NW. co. Kerry, at mouth of river Lee or Leigh, on Tralee Bay, 22 miles NW. of Killarney and 207 miles SW. of Dublin - par., 4604 ac., pop. 9486; town and township, extending into Ratass par., 587 ac., pop. 9910; 4 Banks, 3 newspapers. ...
Market-days, Tuesday and Saturday. By means of a ship canal vessels of about 200 tons can reach the quay; larger vessels discharge at Fenit, 5 miles NW. of the town. Grain and butter are the chief exports; coal, iron, and timber are imported. (For shipping statistics, see Appendix.) There are large barracks for infantry. Tralee Castle, seat, is in vicinity. Tralee returned 1 member to Parliament until 1885.
