In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Ballina like this:
Ballina.-- market and seaport tn., Kilmoremoy par., N. co. Mayo, on river Moy, 168 miles NW. of Dublin by rail and 19 miles NE. of Castlebar by road -- township, 1072 ac., pop. 5760 (including Ardnaree); P.O., T.O., 4 Banks, 2 newspapers. Market-day, Monday. B. is the largest and most thriving town in the co., and has considerable trade in corn and provisions; the Moy is navigable to within 1 mile of it. ...
(For shipping statistics, see Appendix.) It is much frequented by tourists; the waters in the dist. afford excellent angling, and the salmon-fishery is important. This town was seized by the French on their landing at Killala in 1798.
