In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Point of Ayr like this:

AYRE (Point of), a headland at the W side of the mouth of the estuary of the Dee, in Flint. A lighthouse adjoins it, erected on piles in 1844, with lanthern 42 feet high, showing a fixed bright and red light, visible at the distance of 9 miles.
