Place:

Brewery Field  West Riding

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Brewery Field like this:

BREWERY-FIELD, a chapelry in Leeds parish, W. R. Yorkshire; in the part of-the parish within Hunslet district. It was constituted in 1851. Post Town, Leeds. Rated property, about £10,000. Pop., 6,869. Houses, 1,560. The property is much subdivided. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon. Value, £300.* Patron, alternately the Crown and the Bishop.

The location is approximately half way along Meadow Lane, the name "Brewery Field" not having been found on a map. "St Barnabas', Brewery Field" was one of nine churches built in Leeds in the 1840s and 50s by the Church Commissioners (E. Green, "Dr Hook's Missing Churches: The vanishing legacy of Victorian church architecture in Leeds"; http://www.buildingconservation.com/articles/missingchurches/missingchurches.htm, accessed 18 Oct 2011), but in 1901 the parish was merged with Little Holbeck to form the United Parish of St John the Evangelist with St Barnabas (London Gazette, 7 Feb 1939, p. 840). St Barnabas was clearly later demolished, and we would be grateful for information on its location. One other reference to "Brewery Field" is in "A list of streets, squares, courts, lanes, &c. in the town and suburbs of Leeds for 1853", published in Whites' 1853 Directory and Gazetteer, which includes "Brewery field, Meadow lane" (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/Misc/Transcriptions/WRY/LeedsStreets1853.html, accessed 18 Oct 2011). Bacon's Map of Leeds, of 1910, shows Meadow Lane clearly, but neither Brewery Field nor St Barnabas could be located (http://www.artus-familyhistory.com/Leeds%201910/Main%20map.html, accessed 18 Oct 2011).
