In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Brampton like this:

BRAMPTON, a township in Long Marton parish, Westmoreland; 2 miles N of Appleby. Real property, £3,672. Pop., 304. The manor belonged to the Veteriponts, the Greystocks, the Lancasters, and the Burtons.
