In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Dinas Mawddwy like this:
DINAS-MOWDDWY, a decayed ancient borough, in Mallwyd parish, Merioneth; on a romantic spot, at the confluence of the rivers Cerris and Dovey, and at t he terminus of a branch railway, 10 miles E by S of Dolgelly. It has a post office under Shrewsbury, an Established church, and an Independent chapel; and is a seat of petty sessions. Small markets are held on Saturdays; fairs are held on the Friday before Good-Friday, 2 June, 9 Aug., 10 Sep., 22 Oct., and 13 Nov.; and flannel-making and mineral working are carried on. Pop., 289.
