In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Potheridge like this:
POTHERIDGE, a hamlet in Merton parish, Devon; on the river Torridge, 4¼ miles S E of Great Torrington. The manor belonged to the Le Moignes, and passed to the Monks and the Rolles. The Manor House was thebirthplace of General Monk, Duke of Albemarle; and was mostly pulled down after the death of his Duchess.
