In 1882-4, Frances Groome's Ordnance Gazetteer of Scotland described Mossend like this:
Mossend, a village in West Calder parish, Edinburghshire, on the left bank of West Calder Burn, 3 furlongs N of West Calder village. Pop. (1871) 940, (1881) 669.
The location is that marked, although barely readable, on the S First Series map, which is also named as "Mossend" on the modern 1:25,000 map.
