In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Southtown like this:
SOUTHTOWN, or Little Yarmouth, a hamlet in Little Gorleston parish, Suffolk; on the river Yare, opposite Great Yarmouth, and within Yarmouth borough. Real property, £9,386. Pop. in 1851, 1,412; in 1861, 1,714. Houses, 357. It was anciently a separate parish; was annexed, in 1861, to Great Yarmouth borough; and still ranks ecclesiastically as a rectory, annexed to Gorleston.
Although both the Imperial Gazetteer and Bartholomew have separate entries for Southtown and West Town, the name West Town has not been found on any maps, including a search of the Ordnance Survey 1:10,560 map of 1888 (http://www.british-history.ac.uk/mapsheet.aspx?compid=55138&sheetid=8351, accessed 20 Sept 2011). Kelly's Directory for Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk says 'SOUTHTOWN (or WEST TOWN or LITTLE YARMOUTH) is a hamlet of Gorleston parish and a pretty suburb of Great Yarmouth (Norfolk)' (1883, p. 1016; http://apling.freeservers.com/Villages/Southtown.htm, accessed 20 Sept 2011).
