In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Barford like this:
BARFORD, a subdistrict and a hundred in beds. The subdistrict is in the district of Bedford; and contains the parish of Great Barford and four other parishes. Acres, 12,340. Pop., 3,100. Houses, 655.-The hundred includes the subdistrict and three other parishes; extends north-eastward from Bedford to Hunts; and is 11½ miles long and 4¼ broad. Acres, 24,770. Pop., 6,988. Houses, 1,460.
