In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described the East like this:
EAST, a hundred in Rutland. It forms the eastern section of the county; and measures 10¾ miles in extreme length from N to S, and 8½ in extreme breadth. Acres, 18, 743. Pop., 3, 945. Houses, 821.
