In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Oxnam like this:

Oxnam, par. and hamlet, SE. Roxburghshire - par., 21,160 ac., pop. 683; hamlet, on Oxnam Water, 4½ miles SE. of Jedburgh; P.O.; Oxnam Water rises in the Cheviot Hills, and flows 10 miles N. to the Teviot near Crailing.
