In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Duffus like this:
Duffus, coast par. and vil., Elginshire -- par., 9475 ac., pop. 3985; vil. (New Duffus), 5¼ miles NW. of Elgin; P.O.; contains the ruins of Duffus Castle, of time of David II., and the seat of Duffus House.
