In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Tillicoultry like this:
Tillicoultry, police burgh and par., Clackmannanshire, on river Devon, 3½ miles NE. of Alloa and 10 miles NE. of Stirling by rail - par., 6946 ac., pop. 5344; burgh, pop. 3732; P.O., T.O., 2 Banks, 1 newspaper; has mfrs. of shawls, tartans, and other woollen fabrics. Coal is extensively worked in the vicinity.
