In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Uphall like this:
Uphall, par. and vil. with ry. sta., Linlithgowshire - par. (containing the town of Broxburn), 4541 ac., pop. 4812; vil., on Brox Burn, 1½ mile W. of Broxburn and 1 mile N. of its sta., which is 5¾ miles NE. of Bathgate and 13½ SW. of Edinburgh, pop. (including Upper Uphall) 591; P.O., T.O.; has large paraffin works.
