In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stracathro like this:

Stracathro, par., Forfarshire, on West Water, 5239 ac., pop. 487; Stracathro House, seat, on river North Esk, is 4 miles NE. of Brechin; at Stracathro church John Baliol did homage to Edward I. in 1296.
