In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Stenness like this:
Stennes, quoad sacra par., Firth and Stennes, and Sandwick pars., Pomona, Orkney, on the Loch of Stennes, 4 miles NE. of Stromness and 10 miles W. of Kirkwall, pop. 697; P.O.; 1 mile NW. of Stennes church are the "Standing Stones of Stennes," two groups of ancient stone circles similar to those at Stonehenge.
"The location is where the name ""Stenness"" appears on modern 1:50,000 maps, and also adjacent to the Loch of Stenness."
