In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Keynsham like this:
Keynsham.-- market town and par. with ry. sta., Somerset, on river Avon, 5 miles SE. of Bristol, 4171 ac., pop. 2482; P.O., T.O. Market-day, Thursday. Keynsham is an ancient place, and has some remains of an abbey (founded 1172). Malting, brewing, and flax-spinning are the industries; there is also some trade in connection with the neighbouring limestone works. Sheep and stock fairs are held twice a year.
