In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Bethesda like this:

BETHESDA, a hamlet in Llanllechid parish, Carnarvon; 4½ miles SE of Bangor. It has a post office‡ under Bangor; and has recently become populous in connexion with the neighbouring slate-quarries.
