Approx. number of rows:

Table type:

Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1911.

Sources:

  1. The data were transcribed from Table 15(B) 'Grouped Occupations of Females aged 10 years and upwards, in Administrative Counties, County Boroughs, Metropolitan Boroughs, Urban Districts of which the population exceeded 5,000 persons, aggregates of other urban districts, and aggregates of rural districts, also proportion per 1,000 of Unmarried, Married, Widowed, and of Married and Widowed Women engaged in Occupations, and Proportions of Female Domestic Servants to Separate Occupiers or Families, 1911', pp.424-61 in Census of England and Wales 1911, vol. X, Occupations and Industries, Part I (BPP 1913 LXXVIII).
  2. This is a complete transcription of the table created by CDDA for the Historical Population Reports project, and was downloaded from the HistPop web site on 26th September 2016. A partial transcription of the same table was created in 1989 by Pat Furniss at QMW, and is still held.
  3. Although this is a complete transcription of the actual table, in the original report there are footnotes to particular districts which list numbers in specific particularly significant more detailed categories, notably within "Others".

Notes:

  1. This table is limited to towns over 5,000 population, but also includes various totals. The following values of lg_type are associated with individual districts, and always have g_unit set:
    • CB (75 rows): County Borough.
    • MB (185 rows): Municipal Borough.
    • MetB (28 rows): Metropolitan Borough.
    • LCC (1 row): London County Corporate; used only for the City of London.
    • UD (470 rows): Urban District.
These other values of lg_type are associated with totals, and g_unit is set only for the true national total for England and Wales::
    • NTOT (3 rows): national totals for England and Wales. lg_area has three values here: "ENGLAND AND WALES" (i.e. the true totals), "AGGREGATE OF URBAN DISTRICTS (inclusive of County Boroughs)" and "AGGREGATE OF RURAL DISTRICTS".
    • CTOT (62 rows): overall county totals. These exclude any County Boroughs, so have not been given g_unit values.
    • UDA (59 rows): aggregate of "Other Urban Districts", or just "Urban Districts" for counties with no towns over 5,000 population.
    • RDA (61 rows): aggregate of "Rural Districts".
  2. In most areas, the only data given in the original table for textiles is an overall total for Order XVIII 1-6 ('xviii16'). For Lancashire towns, separate figures are given for cotton ('xviii16cotton') and for all other textiles ('xviii16others'). For West Riding towns, separate figures are given for wool ('xviii16wool') and for all other textiles ('xviii16others'). To simplify analysis, xviii16 has been computed from the cotton+others for Lancashire, and wool+others for the West Riding.
  3. The employment categories used here differ significantly from those used for male workers. Those which are the same are noted below in the notes on individual columns.

Checking:

  1. The sum of 'unmarried', 'married' and 'widowed' was checked against the sum of 'retired', 'occ_unmarried', 'occ_married' and 'occ_widowed'.
  2. The sum of 'i1vi5' through 'others' was checked against the sum of 'occ_unmarried', 'occ_married' and 'occ_widowed'.
  3. The proportions in employment ('prop_unmarried', 'prop_married', 'prop_widowed' and 'prop_marrwid') were checked against computed values. In only one case did they differ by more than one: for Hucknall Torkard UD, Nottinghamshire, the proportion either marries or widowed was listed as 106 per thousand, but the computed proportion is 76 per thousand. NB no check of the proportion of domestic servants was possible.
  4. For each county, the sum of "unmarried"+"married"+"widowed" for all rows with type "MB", "MetB", "LCC", "UD", "UDA" and "RDA" always matches that for "CTOT" (NB County Boroughs excluded; so including "CB" will give county totals as normally presented in VoB).
  5. For the country as a whole, the sum of "unmarried"+"married"+"widowed" for all rows with type "CB", "MB", "MetB", "LCC", "UD", "UDA" and "RDA" matches the reported total for those columns for England and Wales, i.e. 14,857,113.
