Sources:

1. These data were obtained from table "QS203EW - Country of Birth (detailed)" for Local Authorities from the 2011 Census of Population. The data was obtained from NOMIS via Census marketing on 6th November 2015 in spreadsheet format. It came from the detailed characteristics part of the 2011 Census section of the nomis website operated by the University of Durham on behalf of the Office for National Statistics. The data are under Crown Copyright, but are made available for use under an Open Government Licence.

Notes:

1. The data contained a caveat about accuracy due to data protection. This may affect results from the check sums: "In order to protect against disclosure of personal information from the 2011 Census, there has been swapping of records in the Census database between different geographic areas, and so some counts will be affected. In the main, the greatest effects will be at the lowest geographies, since the record swapping is targeted towards those households with unusual characteristics in small areas. More details on the ONS Census disclosure control strategy may be found at Census Results / Statistical Disclosure Control."
2. This data came in a very large spreadsheet with 840 columns. Although data loaded into GBHDB is normally kept in it's original format, this dataset was proving very unwieldy. To alleviate this the data was initally loaded into a temporary table containing all columns and then exported to a consolidated table where the birthplaces remained columns, but the gender and age categories became row variables.

Checking:

1. The statistical data have not been checked.
2. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
3. The cross-check of geographical units identified 2 units which did not match. Firstly King's Lynn and West Norfolk where the apostrophe was causing the issue. Secondly Rhonnda, Cynon, Taff where both the commas and the spelling of Taff with a double ff instead of a single one was causing issues. The datasets downloaded from Neighbourhood Statistics all spell the unit name as "TAF" as does the website for the borough council. We therefore have assumed this is a typo in the datasets available from NOMIS only and have manually edited the names in this dataset.
