Table ID:
MIG_1951_S     (1251603)
Contents:
Birth-Places of the Inhabitants of the Counties of Scotland in 1951
Approx. number of rows:
1,791
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. This table was transcribed from 'Table 16. - Birthplaces' A separate table for each Scottish county was published together with separate data tables for some cities.
  2. These data were computerised by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis.
  3. The tables does not include footnotes or endnotes.
  4. This is a full transcription each of the printed tables except for summary data. Data for individual cities where given separately have been added to the relevant county figures to give a county total.

Notes:

  1. The original tables were organised with columns giving the county (or city) of enumeration in 1951 and rows giving the birthplace, but have been re-organised here so that both appear as values in columns.
  2. The birthplace field contains fairly detailed information on places of birth for those born outside Scotland.
  3. We are currently unsure of the census geography used in this table.
  4. The birthplace field contains fairly detailed information on places of birth for those born outside Scotland. For now they have been standardised using an additional column - birthplace type. Places are currently cateogrised as the following:
    • "SAME" same place given for birthplace and location
    • "NATION" another place within Scotland
    • "UK" another place within the rest of the UK plus the Isle of Man and the Channel Islands
    • "ABROAD" is anywhere beyond that including those born at sea
    • "UNKNOWN" is used for those where birthplace was unknown or not stated.
  5. The county field has been renamed from x_county to sco_cnty during the transfer to postgres.

Checking:

  1. In the original tables, the top row of the table gave the total number of inhabitants in each county of residence, and this was used to check the numbers listed as having been born in each county of birth.
  2. The locations refer only to Scottish Counties and in some years cities. These have been matched to the AUO. The birthplaces have not been matched to the AUO.
