Table ID:

Contents:
Birthplace statistics for residents of England and Wales in 1901
Approx. number of rows:
8,631
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paul Ell
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Ancient County
   Unspecified District
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1901.

Sources:

  1. This table was transcribed from the table entitled 'Birthplaces of Males and Females enumerated in the Ancient County and in each County Borough and City'.
  2. These data were computerised by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis.
  3. There are individual tables for each county England and Wales.
  4. The table does not include footnotes or endnotes.

Notes:

  1. The original table was organised with columns as the ancient county of enumeration and rows giving the ancient county of birth, but have been re-organised here so that both counties appear as values in columns.
  2. The birthplace data in 1901 is based on ancient counties save for London, which is recorded as one unit composed of the metropolitan parts of Surrey, Kent and Middlesex. Consequently the data for these 3 counties excludes their metropolitan parts.
  3. In addition to recording birthplace by county for England and Wales, additional birthplace units are listed, most notably those born in the 'Isle of Man and the Channel Island', 'Scotland', 'Ireland', 'British Colonies or Dependencies' and 'Foreign Countries'.
  4. In addition to giving details of people enumerated by county the table also includes selected towns, cities and boroughs.
  5. Table was renamed from mig_1901 when transferred from the Oracle server. Column in Oracle called x_district and x_dis_type actually relate to Local Government Districts based on looking at the original reports.

Checking:

  1. The printed table contains a total for the number of people enumerated in each county together with totals for selected cities and towns. These were compared to the summed birthplace data for each unit.
  2. No matching to the AUO gazetteer has been attempted. These files have been altered to run on Postgres, but otherwise are exactly the same as they were on the oracle server.
