MYTON-UPON-SWALE, a parish, with a small village, in Easingwold district, N. R. Yorkshire; on the river Swale, at its confluence with the Ure, 3¼ miles E of Boroughbridge r. station. Post-town, Boroughbridge, under York. Acres, 1, 480. Real property, £5, 325. Pop. in 1851, 214; in 1861, 155. Houses, 33. The property belongs to S. Stapylton, Esq. Myton Hall is Mr. S. 's seat. A battle between the Scots, under Thomas Randolph, Earl of Moray, and the English, under William de Melton, Archbishop of York, was fought here in 1319; resulted in the discomfiture of the English, with a loss of more than 2,000 men, some accounts say4,000; and obtained the name of the " White Battle, "in consequence of a large number of priests falling in it. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York. Value, £150.* Patron, the Archbishop of York. The church is ancient but good; is supposed to have been built ofstone from the ruins of Isurium; and has a tower and some good stained glass. There are an endowed school with £15 a year, and charities £3.
