OXFORD, WORCESTER, AND WOLVERHAMPTON RAILWAY, a railway in the counties of Oxford, Gloucester, Warwick, Worcester, and Stafford. It commences in a continuation-junction with the Great Western, at Wolvercot, 2½ miles N of Oxford; goes north-westward, past Hanborough, Stonesfield, Charlbury, and Shipton-under-Wychwood: sends off a branch from thevicinity of Wolvercot westward to Witney, and anotherbranch from the vicinity of the boundary with Gloucestershire nor theastward to Chipping-Norton; is connected, at the junction of the Chipping-Norton branch, with aline westward, in Gloucestershire, to Bourton-on-the-Water; proceeds north-northwestward, across wings of Gloucestershire, past Moreton-in-the-Marsh and Chipping-Campden, to Church-Honeybourne on the border of Worcestershire: sends off thence a branch north-eastward to Stratford-on-Avon in Warwickshire; proceeds westward and west-north-westward, past Evesham, Pershore, and Abbots-Wood, to Worcester; crosses the Birmingham and Gloucester railway at Abbots-Wood; and goes from Worcester northward, past Kidderminster, Stourbridge, and Dudley, into Staffordshire, to a junctionwith the Shrewsbury and Chester railway at Wolverhampton. It was authorized in 1845, on a capital of £1, 500,000 in shares, and £500,000 in loans; it acquired power, in 1856, for a further capital of £35,000; it became connected with the Stratford canal, the Stourbridge canal, and the Severn Valley railway; it was incorporated, in 1860, with the Worcester and Hereford and the Newport, Abergavenny, and Hereford railways, to constitute the West Midland; and, as part of the West Midland, it was amalgamated, in 1863, with the Great Western. Its length, within its own proper limits, is 115 miles.
