Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for REETH

REETH, a small town, a township, a sub-district, and a district, in N. R. Yorkshire. The town stands on an eminence near the confluence of the rivers Swale and Arkle, 8½ miles N W of Leyburn r. station; carries on trade in connexion with neighbouring lead mines; serves as a tourists' station, for exploring the mountain scenery of Upper Swaledale and Arkengarthdale; and has a post-office‡ under Richmond, Yorkshire, a good inn, three dissenting chapels, an endowed school, and a workhouse. A weekly market is held on Friday; and fairs are heldon the Friday before Palm-Sunday, the second Friday before 13 May, the Friday before 24 Aug., and the second Friday before 22 Nov. The township contains also the hamlets of Fremington and Healaugh. Acres, 5, 659. Real property, £17, 186; of which £12,070 are in mines. Pop., 1, 299. Houses, 269.—The sub-district contains also the townships of Grinton and Ellerton-Abbey, and the parishes of Arkengarthdale and Marrick. Acres, 29, 899. Pop., 3, 569. Houses, 736. The district comprehends also the sub-district of Muker, containing the chapelry of Muker and the township of Melbecks. Acres, of the district, 70, 267. Poor-rates in 1863, £2, 381. Pop. in 1851, 6, 820; in 1861, 6, 196. Houses, 1, 287. Marriages in 1863, 47; births, 198, of which 15 were illegitimate; deaths, 137, of which 34 were at ages under 5 years, and 2 at ages above 85. Marriages in the ten years 1851-60, 488; births, 2, 362; deaths, 1, 316. The places of worship, in 1851, were 5 of the Church of England, with 2,090 sittings; 4 of Independents, with717 s.; 10 of Wesleyans, with 2, 751 s.; 1 of Primitive Methodists, with 300 s.; and 1 undefined, with 60 s. The schools were 11 public day-schools, with 531 scholars; 8 private day-schools, with 180 s.; and 19 Sunday schools, with 1, 430 s.
