SPITHEAD, a famous roadstead in Hants; in the E end of the Solent, at the mouth of Portsmouth harbour. It takes its name from the Spit, a sandbank about 3 miles long, running southward from Gilkicker Point; is the favourite rendezvous of the British navy; is defended, on the W, by Fort Monkton,-on the E, by South sea Castle and Fort Cumberland; and has been the scene of many remarkable events, noted in our article on Portsmouth.
