Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Bonytown

Bonytown, an estate, with a quondam ancient castle, in Maryton parish, Forfarshire. The estate belonged to the family of Wood, and now is part of the estate of Old Montrose. The castle, the Woods' residence, is represented by only vestiges of a moat. Boon, a hill and a farm in Legerwood parish, Berwickshire. The hill culminates 3 miles ESE of Lander; has a round massive outline; is an offshoot or south-western abutment of the Lammermuir range; and has an altitude of 1070 feet above sea-level. The farm extends south-south-westward from the hill; and has what is thought to have been an ancient market cross, a shaft of sandstone sunk into a square block of the same material.
